Shit happens James! One trick we use is that there is a small power switch box for our air conditioning unit on the back of our house that is covered against the weather and so we have a spare front door key in a zip lock baggie duck taped to the door inside so that anyone who gets locked out can just snag it and let themselves in. mainly I did it because I was the dumbass that locked myself out and it's paid off at least twice so far. There are a lot variations on this theme that one can use to keep the stress down on the home front. Good luck!

@-- Maybe they leave through a backdoor with no chain? People don't put chains on the outside of a door. Chains only lock when someone is inside, if there is no one inside it can't be closed. I really don't get it. So confused!

me neither. maybe it's because i'm german, but all door chains i know are locked from the inside. so if you leave, you couldn't have left it open. But even if that's not it, we wouldn't she be able to open it up? Too confusing for me...

You should have just told him to search for the ”door chain rubber band trick” here on YouTube... it’s devastatingly simple and works like a charm.

Disclaimer: Of course it goes without saying that things like lock-picking, under-door tools, chain/hasp rubber band hacks etc. should only be used by penetration testers and hobbyists (and people locked out of their own home)... never ever ever use the knowledge for nefarious (read: illegal) purposes !!!
