Well this didn't go to plan - This is exactly how NOT to upgrade your VSR Airsoft sniper rifle. Done on my lovely Well MBO3 with a Maple Leaf Hop Rubber Upgrade For the best in airsoft upgrade and accessories, check out www.ProjectAirsoft.co.uk Check out the links below! - I realised before stripping any threads what was going on with that top screw against the outer barrel thread :-) (Agreed it's a ridiculous design)
- I modified the barrel instead of the hop rubber, I ground the bridge off with a dremel, crowned it slightly and polished all the edges.
I left the hop arm stock but shimmed it for stability at the pivot point. I then fine tuned the pressure on the rubber by slowly filing down the two teeth on hop arm until they were applying symmetrical pressure on the rubber.
The results - 4" groups (and that's being harsh) at 35m. Everything else on the gun is stock other than some homemade barrel spacers). I'm blown away, it's almost competing with some of my more expensive rifles. I need to boost the power a bit now as it's running 410fps on a weak spring and, whilst it's all good for torso size targets at 50m, beyond 50m the BBs are losing momentum. I've got high hopes though after seeing what it can do with the current set-up.
Let me know if you want a replacement for the hop-up part you broke, I recently bought a boneyard MB02 so I've got some spares :-)
Remember: Hard hop rubber does not necessarily help hop heavy BBs, in fact a soft one will grip better. The hard rubbers are to reduce wear as FPS goes up. 60-70deg is suitable for UK sniper power limits. Some use even softer.
Don’t start modifying hop rubbers unless for RHop setups as the slightest bit of uneven sanding or wear will make the BBs not fly straight.
Maple leaf rubbers are not designed for bridged barrels, they are for open barrels like ML CrazyJet. However you can get some really decent hop rubbers made for “windowed” barrels.
Do clean your barrel. The majority of the bore may be clean, but the critical part of a sniper barrel is the metal directly opposite the hop nub. Here you will see plastic wiping off the BBs and leaving a white residue and this increases friction making the backspin from the hop rubber less effective. Get a cotton bud and clean up or even polish this part of the barrel.
The pronged type of hop arm is not suitable for heavy weight sniper BBs, they can’t put enough spread pressure on the rubber and usually end up piercing the rubber. Concave or flat arms are best.
However the last piece of airsoft advice. Enjoy a cheap RIF for being a cheap RIF. The moment you start trying to modify a cheap RIF and spend money on parts the more it becomes a money pit that will never be as good or reliable as a quality one, until one day you put it into a bin and get a better one. Still, makes a fun video though.

I do have a rather nice M4 I'm selling at the moment (King Arms with LaRue upper and handguard, proper real steel stuff) if you're interested. I can give you a battery with it too, but it might be a little above your current budget
You also need to factor in the cost of batteries and a charger (and I'd recommend a red dot sight too, they really do make a big difference). Some of the cheap rifs come with batteries and chargers but I wouldn't trust them. If your budget doesn't extend that far (maybe £90 for a decent charger and battery) then the cheapo included stuff should last for now, but I wouldn't want to rely on those things long term.
Once you start playing you'll quickly learn what kind of player you are and what style of gameplay you enjoy. Will you be the entry fragger, the run and gun frontline guy mowing people down in close quarters always pushing ahead, or are you gonna be a few lines back, helping coordinate the assault while plinking guys off at a distance?
The great thing about an M4 is you can easily change it to accommodate all of those different playstyles at different times. You can shorten the barrel and handgurad and up the rate of fire to make it a CQB beast, or you can lengthen it and run it semi-auto to turn it into a DMR and see how long range gameplay feels.
Once you know your game style and know how you enjoy playing, that's when I'd look into spending a bit more money on your second rif. The way I like to look at it is your first rif tells you how you like to play, and your second rif is for that gameplay style.
